Annette Cantilli‘s residence is located in a quiet rural neighborhood in New York State, USA. This project is a deck renovation centered around enhancing outdoor living. The homeowner wanted to preserve the natural wood texture while creating a safer, more open, and modern outdoor space for family relaxation.
Project Overview
Annette’s home sits right beside the lake, and the wooden deck has always been the family’s favorite place to relax. However, over time, the old railing began to corrode and obstruct the open view of the lake. Annette wanted a solution that would allow the scenery to flow naturally into the deck, while also being something she could install herself — both to save on costs and to preserve the enjoyment of DIY.

Based on these needs, Annette chose Muzata’s free design service. Our professional project engineers planned the entire layout, helping her achieve a deck renovation that is safe, open, and modern.
Design & Installation
Muzata provided a free design plan and measurement guidance. After understanding Annette’s requirements, we recommended the Side Mount cable railing system, which was best suited for her wooden deck.
The renovation was built upon the warm wooden deck, complemented by the deep tones of the original house. By refinishing the deck, the visual brightness was enhanced, creating a more cheerful overall effect. At the same time, Muzata’s black stainless steel cable railing system was installed. Its refined lines and open structure extend sightlines and spatial boundaries, allowing the deck to blend seamlessly with the surrounding woodland landscape.
The railing system is paired with an LED light strip design. As night falls, the soft lighting highlights the interplay between wood and metal, enhancing safety for nighttime use while creating a warm and serene atmosphere.
To maximize deck space, the railing installation method was changed from surface mounting to side mounting. By relocating the posts to the sides of the deck, not only was surface space effectively freed up, but a visually clean and uncluttered appearance was also achieved.
The cable railing system selected for Annette’s project combines high strength, durability, and corrosion resistance. The stainless steel cable features a 7×7 strand construction, offering greater flexibility than 1×7 strands while providing higher strength than 7×19 strands. The tensioning hardware is of a hidden design, and both the posts and handrails are suitable for humid or coastal environments, able to withstand rain and snow. Maintenance is simple and effortless—just gently wipe with a soft cloth to keep the system clean and pristine.

After analyzing the project, Muzata’s designers divided the areas requiring cable railings into three zones: the cantilevered deck, the porch, and the deck . For each zone, they provided corresponding 3D models and multi-angle dimensioned drawings to accurately replicate the actual environment.
These drawings indicate the exact placement of each post, minimizing installation errors. By following the positions shown in the design plans, a visually clean and structurally stable cable railing system can be achieved with ease.

After completion, the deck has become the main space for the homeowner and her family to relax, enjoy the view, and host gatherings, while also enhancing the overall quality of living in the residence.
