Look is nice but assembly is terrrible

The style and look of the finished product is nice, but I had a very difficult time putting the units together. While the system was billed as an somewhat easy installation, even with the help of a professional handyman the assembly was very tedious and the instructions were not very helpful. I would only purchase again if I could find either a certified installer or someone who has a lot of experience with the product.

High impact looks, advanced DIY project

We are thrilled with the appearance and build quality of our new side-mount railing system. To bring the cost down a bit, we sourced the top railing (wood) separately. The cable rail replaced a very dated wood railing in our ski home. We installed four railings altogether. Two straight runs of 14’ and 6 feet, and two staircase railings of about 7’ and 5’. So, we got to experience both types of installations.

Pros:
- relatively easy to follow instructions and Help videos. Definitely watch the videos. Our model had slightly different parts, but the sequence was easier to understand and adapt to our model.
- black cables with the black powder coat posts looks amazing. It was easy to match the wood top rail paint color (black satin) to the metal parts.
- the buying process was simple. We submitted photos and measurements and a design team produced drawings and parts lists. There were zero missing parts (we had a few extras when we finished in most cases). During that process, the designers realized the railing at the top of the steps needed a floor post, not a side mount. They quickly updated our order.
- the time investment wasn’t too bad…we gave up two weekends to install four railings which included demo of the old railings, patching the walls and repainting.

Stuff you’ll want to consider ahead of time:
- laser level and guide to help align the post tops
- do you have a solid header/joist/stud behind the drywall and are the provided lag screws the right length for your wall.
- magnetic levels
- multiple cordless drills so you’re not constantly switching bits

Cons:
- we’ve done a lot of home DIY, and this one maxed out our skills. Older homes can have janky walls that aren’t plumb or straight. A LOT of our time was spent measuring and leveling. The video only shows leveling left-right. There’s also front-back, and up-down. We had to creatively use shims and washers to get the posts aligned.
- stair side-mount has this D-shaped washer that is incredibly difficult to use (does not hammer into place or stay fixed), and we are not sure why it was necessary. There’s no explanation why it must face “down” as labeled. And it’s almost impossible to accomplish this. We got things to work, but that was very frustrating.
- bottom caps are very difficult to install, especially on posts that are close to the floor.
- not a one-person project. Two is best and they need to be able to work as a team.

Suggestions:
- reengineer a solution for those D-washers or ensure they hammer into place and stay put. Magnetic maybe? The angled posts with these ring offered no advantage over the straight posts with the small holes.
- provide a measurement card for both install types. The cable install went much faster after I made a card labeled 1.25” and 27/32” that I could just hold next to the cable and cut.
- provide simple shims to help with adjusting the forward-back angle of the railing. They have to be plumb on both axes.
- put a few tiny magnetic levels in the bag that you can stick to the posts and measure level left-right and front-back. Like what tv wall mounts often come with.

We love the final product!

Thank you for taking the time to leave us a detailed review, your railings look beautiful! We are delighted to hear that you are happy with the appearance and quality of our railing system. We strive to provide easy-to-follow instructions and helpful videos to assist with installation.

We appreciate your feedback on the installation process and will take it into consideration for future improvements. Our design team is always available to assist with any questions or concerns. We hope you enjoy your new railing system for many years to come~

Excellent Experience

This was a wonderful project. I simply sent measurements and photos, and Muzata created 3D drawings and put together a list of all I needed. We had one minor snag with one of the posts not having the correct holes, but they overnighted a replacement. Directions were fairly easy to follow, although there are a TON of different components and it took me a while to workout where everything went. Quality of product was actually better than I had expected.

FAQs

1. How to drill a level hole in a post?

Muzata stainless steel posts come pre-drilled, so you don't need to drill holes yourself, making installation easier and saving time.

2. What is the 4 ball rule for railing?

The 4-ball rule means no gap in a cable railing system should allow a 4-inch ball to pass through. This safety code ensures children cannot slip through. Muzata’s brushed cable posts are designed to meet this rule.

3. Are steel posts cheaper than wood?

In general, basic wood railings are cheaper upfront, but metal railings can be more cost-effective in the long run due to lower maintenance costs.

4. What is the standard height for post?

The standard railing post height is usually between 36–42 inches (about 91–107 cm), depending on local building codes and design requirements.

5. What should be the spacing between posts?

Since Muzata handrail length is 6'6", we typically divide it into two 39" sections to reduce waste and enhance safety.
For a single section, we recommend keeping the distance between posts no more than 5 feet, and for continuous sections, no more than 54 inches. This is to ensure safety and the longevity of the railing system.
